From Street Vendor to Rwanda Leading Fashion Brand

Patrick learned to sew from his grandmother in a small village in Musanze District. As a teenager, he moved to Kigali with nothing but a sewing machine and a dream. He started by selling clothes from a mat on the streets of Kimironko Market.

His unique designs, which blended traditional Rwandan imigongo patterns with modern fashion trends, quickly attracted attention from young professionals looking for something different.

In 2019, Patrick saved enough to rent a small shop in Kimironko and officially launched Inkera Fashion. He named the brand after the traditional Rwandan warrior spirit, symbolizing strength and creativity.

The turning point came when a Rwandan fashion blogger featured one of his designs on social media, and it went viral. Orders flooded in from across Kigali and beyond. Patrick hired his first two employees ? both young women from his village who had also learned to sew.

Inkera Fashion now operates two flagship stores in Kigali (Kimironko and Kigali Heights) and an online store that ships across Africa. The brand employs 35 people, including designers, tailors, and marketing staff.

The collections include menswear, womenswear, and accessories, all featuring the signature imigongo-inspired patterns. Inkera has dressed celebrities, politicians, and has been featured at fashion shows in Lagos, Nairobi, and Paris.

Patrick is launching an academy to train young Rwandan designers and tailors, providing them with both traditional techniques and modern business skills. He plans to open stores in Nairobi, Lagos, and London by 2028.

The brand is also developing a sustainable fashion line using locally sourced fabrics and natural dyes, positioning Inkera at the intersection of African heritage and global sustainability trends.
