Marie grew up in a farming family in Huye District, Southern Rwanda. She witnessed firsthand the environmental damage caused by burning agricultural waste after harvest. Rice husks, maize stalks, and banana fibers were routinely burned, contributing to air pollution and soil degradation.
After completing her studies in Environmental Engineering at the Carnegie Mellon University Africa campus, Marie was determined to find a sustainable solution to this widespread problem.
In 2022, Marie founded GreenPack Rwanda with a simple but powerful idea: transform agricultural waste into biodegradable packaging materials. She started with a small workshop in the Huye Industrial Zone and a team of 5 people.
The early days were incredibly challenging. Securing consistent raw materials, developing the right manufacturing process, and convincing businesses to switch from plastic packaging required persistence and creativity. Marie spent months perfecting her formula using rice husks and banana fiber.
GreenPack Rwanda now operates a modern factory in Huye and employs over 85 people. The company produces biodegradable plates, cups, food containers, and shopping bags that are used by major supermarkets, restaurants, and event organizers across Rwanda.
The company has partnered with Shoprite Rwanda, Nakumatt, and over 200 restaurants and hotels. GreenPack products are also being distributed in Uganda and Burundi through regional partnerships.
Marie plans to expand production capacity threefold by 2026 and enter the European market, where demand for sustainable packaging is growing rapidly. She is developing new products including biodegradable phone cases and cosmetic containers.
GreenPack is also launching a farmer collection program that will pay premium prices for agricultural waste, creating an additional income stream for over 5,000 smallholder farmers.
