How a University Dropout Built East Africa Leading EdTech Platform

David dropped out of university in his second year due to financial difficulties. However, he was passionate about education and technology. He taught himself web development through free online resources and began building educational tools in his spare time.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, he saw how millions of students across East Africa were locked out of classrooms. This crisis became the catalyst for his most important work.

In 2020, David launched LearnRwanda, a mobile-first e-learning platform designed specifically for East African students. The platform offers curriculum-aligned content in English, French, Kinyarwanda, and Swahili, making education accessible across linguistic barriers.

The platform initially offered free access during the pandemic, gaining rapid traction. By the end of 2020, over 50,000 students had registered. Schools began adopting the platform for supplementary learning.

Today, LearnRwanda serves over 200,000 students across Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Burundi. The platform hosts over 10,000 video lessons, interactive quizzes, and AI-powered tutoring features. The company employs 65 people and has raised .5 million in funding from African and international investors.

Partnerships with Ministries of Education in Rwanda and Uganda have made the platform available for free to all public school students. The platform has also launched vocational training modules for out-of-school youth.

David envisions LearnRwanda becoming the largest educational technology platform in Africa by 2030. The company is developing AI-powered personalized learning paths, offline-first capabilities for low-connectivity areas, and AR/VR educational experiences.

The next major initiative is a teacher training platform that will help educators across Africa adopt technology-enhanced teaching methods, reaching 100,000 teachers by 2027.
